INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
======================================================

To install OpenGEM, decompress the zipfile named "OPENGEM.ZIP" to C:\. This will
set up your OpenGEM system and make it ready-to-run. After you unpack the zipfile
you will notice a file called "FGCONFIG.SYS" in your root directory. Add the lines
from this file to your "CONFIG.SYS" file.

That's it!

To run OpenGEM just type "GEM" at the command prompt.

OpenGEM contains mouse and sound drivers. They do not load automatically when you
start the Graphical User Interface. To get them to load please edit the GEM.BAT
file. The necessary changes are clearly labeled. You can find gem.bat at C:\

IMPORTANT: Please see LICENSE.TXT before using this software.

You can find all the documentation on the C:\GEMAPPS\DOCS folder in TXT format.
There is also HTML help inside the OpenGEM distribution. Run GEMWeb and
select "bookmarks" to access it.

NOTES
======================================================

This is version 1.1.0 of OpenGEM. It should therefore be both stable and fully
working. If you find an error with OpenGEM please report it so that it can be
fixed! Do also check the OpenGEM website at http://gem.shaneland.co.uk for updates
and bugfixes.

======================================================
KNOWN ISSUES
======================================================

(1) OpenGEM's desktop (Ben A. L. Jemmett's FreeGEM Desktop) conflicts with the Kernel in FreeDOS Beta 7 and Beta 8. This issue is being resolved by the creation of a multiple desktop version of OpenGEM (slated to be OpenGEM version 2.0.0). OpenGEM 2.0.0 will be released in October.

(2) The OpenGEM desktop only shows icons for drives A: to D:

(3) If OpenGEM is installed to a drive other than the C: drive some applications may not work. Also, when you try to open the "Applications" folder on the desktop you may receive an error message saying: "Sorry, but the Directory name you have entered exceeds the maximum number of characters."

(4) If you open and close a drive icon on the OpenGEM desktop more than twice, and try to open it for a third time, you will still see the animated growbox, but no window will open. If you continue to open such invisible windows, you will receive either the error message "The GEM Desktop has no more available windows. Before you open a disk, close a window you're not using" or "Sorry, but the Directory name you have entered exceeds the maximum number of characters."

If you discover an issue with OpenGEM please report it by emailing us at gem@shaneland.co.uk
